各位、 　4月になり日本の各地は桜が満開だそうですが、ニューヨークは寒い日が続きます。それでも道端には水仙の黄色い花が咲き始めました。 「米語Watch」をお送りします。読んでいただいてありがとうございます。

 米語Watch（朝日Weeklyおよび週刊NY生活紙に連載中)- Passive-aggressive 遠回しに批判的な 　レストランの前に駐車して帰って来たら、Passive-aggressive　Noteという紙切れがワイパーに挟んであり、「次は、神様のお恵みで、もっと上手に駐車できますよ！」と書かれていました。確かに車は少し斜めに入っていたけれど・・・　親しいアメリカ人の女性に、「その服、ふっくらして可愛いね」といったら、ちょっと睨んで「Passive-aggressiveね」と言われました。本当に可愛いと思ってのことで、他の意図はなかったのですが・・・ 　Passive-aggressiveは医学的には受動攻撃的精神障害ということですが、アメリカの日常会話では、上のように、遠回しに批判（または要求・攻撃）する態度を意味します。 　日本に長く住んだアメリカ人の知人は、日本人もけっこうPassive-aggressiveだと言います。 会社の食事会にラフな格好で参加したら、微妙な目つきで 　「アメリカは多様性の国でいいですね！」　役所の外国人登録にヘタな漢字を書いたら、首をかしげて「とっても個性的！」 　Passive-aggressiveな表現はどの国にもあるのでしょう。しかし、表の言い回しと裏の真意が違うのは、誤解を生む元ですね。とりわけ、文化的背景が違う方とのお話には、ご注意を。（自分に言ってます・・・） （旦　英夫　ニューヨーク州弁護士）

毎回、感染者数のニュースを聞く度に、全感染者数に占める、ワクチン接種者数（1回/2回/3回ごと）を知りたくなります。　　ワクチン接種の有効性を簡単に分かりやすく（私のようなオバサンにも…笑）証明してほしいです。

奥様のJadaさんの髪型（円形脱毛症）についてコメディアンからGIカットとジョークを飛ばされ、カッと切れてしまい、平手打ち…の、ニュースを聞いた時、一瞬、Jadaを庇う優しい旦那様なんだと思いましたが… 英会話サロンのサム先生によると、”それは、日本人的な考え方。アメリカでは、あってはならないと行為”との話を聞き… 英会話サロンが盛り上がりました。　とても興味深かったです。

サム先生によると:
1) Will Smithのような大スターとして、あるまじき行為。
2) Will Smithご夫妻が、Scientologyのサポーターであること。
3) Will smith ご夫妻がOpen Marriageを認めていること…
など、アメリカ社会についても学ぶ機会になりました。英会話サロン、楽しいです。　それにしても、何かと、浪花節的で、根っからニッポン人の私なのだと痛感しました（笑）

「A slap on the wrist」

直訳すると「手首を叩く」ですが、
このイディオムは何を意味するのでしょう？

正解　→　「軽く叱る」「軽い罰」

「Slap」＝叩く
「Wrist」＝手首

【解説】
子供が何か悪いことをしたときに、パシっと手を軽く叩いて叱ることを想像してもらったら分かりやすいと思います。本当はもっと厳しい罰が与えられるはずが「軽い罰」や「警告」で収まる時に使われます。

【例文】
