米語Watch（朝日Weeklyおよび週刊NY生活紙に連載中)- Missing White Woman Syndrome 「行方不明白人女性」症候群 ニューヨークに住むギャビー・ペティートという名の若い金髪の白人女性が、婚約者と一緒にドライブ旅行の最中に行方不明になりました。男性が当局に何も説明しない中、彼女の遺体がワイオミング州の山中で見つかると同時に、男性が姿を消し、全米のメディアが事件の経過を刻々と伝えています。 事件がセンセーショナルな注目を集める一方で、この報道のあり方が、Missing White Woman Syndrome (不明白人女性症候群）という米メディアの体質を象徴していると指摘されています。つまり、この不明者が白人女性だから注目されたが、有色人種だったら無視されただろうという批判です。 実際、黒人・ラテン系などの少数民族の女性が、毎年何万人も行方不明になっていると言う現実は、ほとんど報道されることはありません。 米ジャーナリズムの世界は、他の産業に比べて、マイノリティへの差別が少ないと言われています。 しかし、２０年近く前、女性黒人ジャーナリストが作り出した言葉Missing White Woman Syndrome は、今なお残るメディアのマイノリティ軽視の体質を鋭く暴くことで、人種平等をより意識し、人種に左右されない一貫した報道姿勢への転換を迫っているのです。 （旦 英夫 ニューヨーク州弁護士）

母が他界し、1か月が経ちました。 遺品の整理をしていたら、母の4人姉妹（9人兄弟姉妹中）の写真を発見しました。 クリスチャンの家庭に育ち、一番年上の姉（叔母）はシスターに。(長年、幼稚園の園長/教会のオルガン奏者をしていました。） ただし、母自体は、とてもリベラルで、私に信仰を強要したことがありませんでした。 ただ、一番大切なことは、聖書の教えをどれたけ知っているとかではなく、”愛”に満ちた行動をしなければならない、と、いう教えでした。 今日から10月。 気持ち新たにがんばります！
One month has passed since my mother left us. While reluctantly launching an overdue clean-up project (of her belongings,) I came upon an old picture of her with her sisters (nine siblings) all standing in front of a church. Raised by devout Christian parents, her eldest sister became a nun and served as a principal of a Catholic kindergarten in Osaka for many years. Being quite liberal in terms of religious outlook, my mother never forced me to practice Catholicism, telling me that the most important thing in life is to practice true love. Quoting from Corinthians 1-1: “If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.“
