Retronym
◆複retronyms◆語源retro（レトロ）+ synonym（同意語）。主に技術の発達により新しい言葉や意味が生まれたために言葉の本来の意味が曖昧になったので、本来の意味を示すために形容詞＋名詞で作らなければいけなくなった新語。例として、televisionはcolor televisionが出たことで black-and-white televisionが生まれ、さらに cable televisionが出たことで on-air televisionのレトロニムが生まれた。

Survival of the fittest(適者生存)
高校時代、世界史の授業で、デカルトやスピノザなど、17世紀を代表する哲学者(合理主義）に興味を抱いた事がありました。なかでも、スピノザの宗教感に強く魅せられました。アインシュタインが自身の宗教感は、スピノザに重なると表明していたことに起因するのかもしれません。英検一級/準一級の必須ボキャブラリー, Atheist（無神論者）/Pantheist(汎神論者）について調べていたら、とても、興味深い文章を見つけました。
“When Einstein gave lectures at U.S. universities, the question students asked him most was: Do you believe in God? And he always answered: I believe in the God of Spinoza.
Baruch de Spinoza was a Dutch philosopher considered one of the great rationalists of 17th century philosophy, along with Descartes.
According to Spinoza, God would say: “Stop praying. I want you to go out into the world and enjoy your life. I want you to sing, have fun and enjoy everything I’ve made for you.
“Stop going into those dark, cold temples that you built yourself and saying they are my house. My house is in the mountains, in the woods, rivers, lakes, beaches. That’s where I live and there I express my love for you.

BEIGO Watch [193] : Court Packing 米語 Watch [193] : Court Packing 各位、マンハッタンの冬の風物詩、ロックフェラー・センターのクリスマスツリーの点灯式は、無観客で行われました。 ２０２０年の師走は例年とは全く違うものになりそうです。 それは恐らく日本でも同じことなのでしょう。 その中でも、健康に気をつけて楽しみを見つけて行きましょう。 米語Watchをお送りします。
米語Watch（週刊NY生活紙、朝日ウィークリー紙に連載中)- Court Packing 米最高裁の構成を政治的に操作すること 大統領選挙の結果、バイデン氏が勝利しました。 新政権が何をもたらすのか・・・中でも、Court Packing の可能性が、話題になっています。Courtは裁判所で、Packは詰め込むことですが、1937年にルーズベルト大統領がニューディール政策遂行のため最高裁判事の数を増やそうとしたことがCourt Packingと呼ばれ、この表現が定着しました。 最高裁の判事（通例のJudgeではなくJusticeと呼ぶ）の定員は１８６９年に９人と立法化されました。 現在、６人が保守派、３人が進歩派です。この内、３人はトランプ氏が指名した保守派の判事で、とりわけバレット判事は今回の大統領選挙の直前に指名されたことから、民主党サイドには強い反発があります。 （２０１６年オバマ大統領が、進歩派のガーランド判事を最高裁に指名しようとした時、大統領選が９ヶ月後に迫っているとして共和党が審議に応じなかった） 最高裁判事の定数は、法律で変えることができます。 実際、最高裁の定員を３人増やし、進歩派の判事を指名することで、最高裁のバランスを回復することを期待する民主党員は多いのです。 もし民主党が１月に行われるジョージア州での二席の上院議員決選投票で勝てば、Court Packingが現実の視野に入ってくるでしょう。そうならなくとも、アメリカ社会での最高裁の影響力を考えるとき、バイデン新政権のもとで、Court Packingが大きい論点になり続けるのは間違いありません。

たとえば、どこかとても痛いところがあれば、歯医者さんなどでは、治療の痛みをほとんど感じなくなります。と、同じように、すごく辛いことがあると、日々起こる小さな辛さは、その存在すら忘れてしまいます。ひょっとしたら、そのすごく辛い事は、より、強く、良い人になるためには必要な事なのかもしれません…..と、歯医者さんで、ふと思いました。
If you have serious pain in some parts of your body, you won’t feel any pain during the (scary) treatment at the dentist. Likewise, if you have some overwhelming hardship/pain in life, other minor problems which you often complain about become nothing to talk about. I somehow appreciate the hardship which I thought I could not accept because it makes me a stronger and better person…

米語 Watch [192] コロナウイルスはアメリカでも日本でも感染が急拡大して来ました。 来週に迫ったThanksgiving Day（感謝祭）は、いつもと全く違ったものになりそうです。 人に自由に会えないことは辛いことですね。 米語Watch（週刊NY生活紙、朝日ウィークリー紙に連載中)-
“Sore Loser” 負けを潔く認められない人 選挙の結果を受け入れないトランプ大統領を、バイデン支持派はSore Loser だと痛烈に批判します。Soreはヒリヒリ痛いという意味ですが、米語ではイライラするという意味もあり、負けをなかなか認められない人という慣用句です。 反対に潔く負けを受け入れられる人はGood Loserといいます。 アメリカの歴史の中で、大統領選での敗者が勝者にお祝いの電話をして、その後、敗北受諾演説（Concession Speech）をすることが伝統になっています。これを受けて勝者が勝利宣言（Victory Speech）をすることで、国民の心の中で決着します。特に、現役の大統領が再選されなかった場合、このステップは政権移行（Transition)のために最も大事な第一歩となるのです。 アメリカ政治の伝統に背を向けていたトランプ氏がSore Loserになるのは、驚くほどのことではないかも知れません。しかし、スムーズな政権移行は国家の内外において安全保障を担保するものです。今からでも、トランプ氏が利己を超え、国のためにGood Loserとして振舞うことを、多くの米国民は望んでいることでしょう。 （旦 英夫 ニューヨーク州弁護士）

“Karen”
特権的な態度で人を見下す白人女性 １９６０年代白人家庭で生まれた女子に好んで付けられた名前Karen。このKarenが、横暴な態度をとる白人女性を意味するスラングとして使われます。例えば、店員やウェイターに理不尽な要求をしたり、近所を歩く黒人に「何をしているのか？」と理由なく追及するような白人女性のことだそうです。 ５月にセントラル・パークで起きた事件。鳥を観察していた黒人男性に犬に綱をつけるよう依頼された白人女性が、警察に「黒人に脅されてる」と虚偽の通告をしたと刑事訴追されました。 資産運用会社の幹部だったこの女性は仕事を失った上に、ネット上で、とんでもないKarenだとして糾弾されました。 Karenは今では、このパンデミックの最中にマスクをしない権利を声高に主張するような人たちにも使われ、自分勝手な言動を繰り返す一部の特権的な白人女性を批判する決まり文句になりました。 これは女性に対するひどい表現、それとも、アメリカ社会の一断面を鋭く反映する言葉？ （旦 英夫 ニューヨーク州弁護士）

米語 Watch [190] : Long-hauler 各位、 急に秋が深まってきました。いかがお過ごしでしょうか？ 家の近くの海辺で、多くの人が魚を釣っています。 石鯛やヒラメを狙っています。 昨日、私も釣竿を持ち出して頑張ってみました。 残念ながらNo luck。 また来週。 -米語Watch（週刊NY生活紙、朝日ウィークリー紙に連載中)- Long-hauler コロナ後遺症で苦しむ人 アメリカの新型コロナウイルス感染者は８００万人超、死者は２２万人に迫っています。 その報道の中で、Long-haulerという言葉が注目されています。Haulとは運ぶ又は引っ張ることで、ふつうLong-haulerは長距離トラック運転手のことですが、最新の米語としてはコロナ後遺症に長く苦しむ人を意味します。 はっきりした統計はありませんが、アメリカだけで何十万という人が、コロナ感染後、呼吸器、消化器や心臓などの不調に加え、慢性的な疲労感や記憶障害など精神・神経の問題を数ヶ月にわたって経験していると言われます。 それはコロナの重篤症状で入院した患者だけではなく、軽度で自宅療養した人にも起きるそうです。 新型コロナについて分からないことが多くあります。そのため、Long-haulerについて治療法（Post-Covid Care)が確立されるまでには時間がかかることでしょう。 ただ少なくとも、コロナから回復したように見えても、ひどい後遺症に長く苦しむ人が多くいることを社会が認知し、彼らが必要な理解とサポートが得られることを期待したいです。 （旦 英夫 ニューヨーク州弁護士）
